January 2012

"Masterful songcraft, effortlessly embracing the range of the human condition: from brushing teeth to the outer reaches of the cosmos to the Great Spirit without leaving the back porch......presented with great gentleness and heart, and a minimalist's love of space and silence.  Easily my favorite record of the year.  It has more in common with a great novel or book of poetry than it does with most music being made today."  -  Mason Jennings

From the haunting opening track “Cry, Cry, Crow,” The Pines conjure up rural specters and ghosts from the farms slowly disappearing throughout their native Midwest. Exploring the tension between city and small town and the loneliness that can exist in both, they move through breakups and new beginnings on songs like “If By Morning,” “All the While,” “Dead Feathers” and the radio-friendly “Chimes.” Whether hitting deep grooves (“Rise Up and Be Lonely”) or playing contemplative instrumentals (“Moonrise, IA” and “Losing the Stars”), The Pines cook up a diverse palette of musical flavors and songs that reflect on cold days, dark nights and the hope that shines in between. Drawing light out of shadows, Dark So Gold is an album that provides solace in hard times and stands as The Pines’ masterwork to date.

The Pines new single "Rise Up and Be Lonely" from the forthcoming album "Dark So Gold" is available on iTunes!  The record will be released on January 31st, and is available for pre-order at Amazon; watch for upcoming tour dates and news about The Pines new release...
